Perdue to invest 30M in Tradepoint Atlantic organic grain facility

A division of poultry giant Perdue Farms plans to create more than 25 jobs through a new facility at Tradepoint Atlantic, the former Sparrows Point steel mill site in eastern Baltimore County.

Perdue AgriBusiness said it will invest $30 million in the organic grain receiving and storage facility. The Tradepoint project will include grain and oilseed processing and milling manufacturing.

The 20-acre complex will meet an increased demand for organic feed ingredients for Salisbury-based Perdue Foods and other companies in the region.

“We’re on a mission to make organic chicken more accessible to more consumers, but the limiting factor is the availability of organic grain,” said Perdue Farms CEO Randy Day in a statement. “Expanding our grain operations at Tradepoint Atlantic and the Port of Baltimore will support the continued growth of our organic poultry production in the region.”

The Maryland Department of Commerce is extending a $350,000 grant through its Advantage Maryland fund for the expansion and the Baltimore County Council is considering another undisclosed conditional loan for the move. In addition Salisbury-based Perdue is eligible for state tax credits including a Job Creation Tax Credit and Enterprise Zone incentives.

The expansion is the latest at the 3,100-acre Tradepoint site. Perdue will join FedEx Ground, Amazon.com, Under Armour and Pasha Automotive at the industrial hub. Hi-end salad green grower Gotham Greens said in May it would open a 100,000 square foot hydroponic greenhouse at Tradepoint early next year to grow arugula, basil and bok choy.

The 3,100 Tradepoint redevelopment is expected to house more than 10,000 employees by 2025.

Tradepoint Atlantic is a joint venture of Hilco Global of Chicago and Hanover-based Redwood Capital Investments LLC, which purchased the former steel mill site out of bankruptcy in 2014 for $110 million.

Tradepoint officials are seeking a tax increment financing package from Baltimore County in the coming moths to help fund development of infrastructure at the site.
